Calgary: Northwest

calgarynw_b.png

Much of Calgary's northwest is quickly becoming one of the city's most affluent areas. Character homes sit atop a ridge that overlook the city, downtown core and Rocky Mountains in areas such as Rosedale and Crescent Heights, once economical neighbourhoods that now come with a high price tag. Sunnyside, on the western side of the ridge, is a popular pocket of land with lots of personality. This trendy community (with many shops, dining, pubs and cafes) has, in the past, attracted a socially conscious population that is not only involved in neighbourhood watches and recycling, but car sharing and neighbourhood park developments as well. Charming character homes with streets lined with mature vegetation command high property prices.

Being that it is a quieter, upscale area of the City of Calgary, home to much of the upper-middle class, it stands to reason that this quadrant houses the majority of learning centres in Calgary including: The University of Calgary and all its beautiful and spacious grounds, the University Hospital and S.A.I.T. (Southern Alberta Institute of Technology). Cultural centres in Calgary’s northwest include: The Jubilee Auditorium, near SAIT, which is home to the Alberta Ballet and the Calgary Opera.

Many of Calgary’s world class sports facilities are also in this area. Canada Olympic Park, the Olympic Oval, McMahon Stadium (view on google maps) , the Father David Bauer Arena (home of Team Canada Hockey) (view on google maps) and various public pools, arenas and fitness centres can all be found in this quadrant. There are a variety of public parks including Nose Hill Park (view on google maps) , the north side of Edworthy Park and Confederation Park, among others.

Various shopping and entertainment districts are located in this section of the City. Districts such as Kensington are trendy, upscale community hotspots that house various shopping, restaurant and entertainment options. For a more traditional shopping experience, Market Mall is a centrally located and upscale shopping centre and Northland Mall will pique the eccentric shopping tastes. The northwest is a well established area of the City of Calgary, however there are still some neighbourhoods on the outskirts of the Northwest that still have current new development projects and opportunities.

On the outskirts are the suburban communities of Country Hills, Hamptons, Hidden Valley and Tuscany—all with large houses and new landscaping. Between the inner city and suburbia are communities such as Varsity Estates and University Heights that seem to combine the large homes of suburbia with the mature landscaping of inner city neighbourhoods.

Golfers will also be attracted to this quadrant of the city. There are a variety of both public and private courses to suit all tastes and skill levels. Calgary northwest golf courses include: Valley Ridge Golf Club, Silver Springs Golf Club, Country Hills Golf Club, Confederation Park Municipal Golf Course, Harvest Hills Golf Course and Driving Range, Highland Golf and Country Club, Country Club of the Hamptons, Lynx Ridge Golf and Country Club and Bearspaw Country Club.

Below are Northwest communities that have current new building and development opportunities:

  • Rocky Ridge
  • Royal Oak
  • Tuscany
  • Valley Ridge
  • Citadel
  • Hamptons (limited inventory remaining)
  • Kincora
  • Evanston
