Calgary Stampede: The Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth
196943~The-Calgary-Stampede-Posters.jpg
Background on the Calgary Stampede:

The Calgary Stampede is a volunteer-supported, not-for-profit community organization that preserves and promotes western heritage and values. The Stampede contributes to the quality of life in Calgary and southern Alberta through its world-renowned 10-day Stampede, year-round facilities, western events and several youth and agriculture programs. All revenue is reinvested into Calgary Stampede programs and facilities.

In 1912 the great Stampede was born from the vision of Guy Weadick. Guy was a famous working cowboy and vaudeville entertainer featured in the traveling wild-west shows that were popular world-wide in the early 1900s. He was a man with a dream of celebrating the romance and authentic culture of the old west.

The Stampede we enjoy today has evolved from Guy's vision. He was successful because he understood that as much as things change, we need to believe in the way things were.

Our historical information tells the story of who we were in our earliest days, and reminds us that Guy was right; fundamentally we believe in the same western values today as we did in 1912.

Calgary Stampede History:

In 1884, Calgary was incorporated as a town and was home to 500 people. In 1908 Calgary was the host for the Dominion Exhibition, located on its Exhibition lands, which were christened Victoria Park.  Government funding supported the construction of an exhibits building, the roofed grandstand, the livestock exhibits building and several barns. Parimutual betting (a system where all bets of a particular type are placed together in a pool) was introduced at the horse races.

1912 marks the historic date when Guy Weadick produced the first “Frontier Days and Cowboy Championship Contest”, soon to be known as the Calgary Stampede. The Big Four (Pat Burns, George Lane, A.E. Cross and A.J. Maclean) provided financial backing. In 1923, The “Calgary Stampede” merged with the “Calgary Industrial Exhibition” to form the “Calgary Exhibition and Stampede.” Guy Weadick also invented chuckwagon racing this same year. The Calgary Exhibition and Stampede continued to flourish and add to its buildings and the Stampede Corral was completed in 1950 and the Big Four Building officially opened in 1959.

There were more developments in the subsequent 20 years including the construction of a new larger grandstand with a 5/8th mile racetrack and infield. It was with the approach of the 1988 Winter Olympics, to be hosted in Calgary, that the Coliseum (Saddledome) was built in 1980 and officially opened in 1983.

Calgary Exhibition & Stampede of Today:

Today’s Calgary Exhibition and Stampede has been looking towards the future and further development since the unveiling of its “Horizon 2000” expansion plan in 1990. The goal was to develop the grounds into a year-round tourist attraction while taking into consideration the environmental impact of the grounds with the announcement of a greening project that would eventually see all the asphalt on the grounds converted to greenspace. In 2004, Calgary Exhibition & Stampede released a detailed expansion and development plan-a 15 year, $550 million package of projects beginning with the construction of a new and relocated Stampede Casino. In July 2007, the government of Canada announced a $25 million grant towards the greening project and construction began on the $50 million expansion of the Roundup Centre. This expansion is scheduled to be completed by late summer 2009.The Calgary Stampede currently draws over 1.2 million people every year and on Friday, July 11, 2008 it had a record breaking day, drawing over 150,000 guests in one day to the grounds on its Celebration day of Québec City’s 400th anniversary.
